I wanted to make this piece to look at how cosmetic and fashion advertising is changing the way we look at our bodies, especially the way young women see themselves. I took images found in modern advertising and painted over them in a visual language intended to make them look alien, superhuman, intimidating, humorous or otherwise artificial. The colours I used were inspired by contour and colour correcting palettes. These makeup products are currently hugely popular and are used to dramatically change our skin and bone structure. While these techniques can make people feel more confident they are also distancing ourselves from ourselves. I think it’s important to examine the ways that the beauty industry affects our generation and to ensure we are not simply victims of their advertising.
