This selection of images is part of a much larger typology of single use face masks, collected off the streets of Glasgow, Scotland in 2020. This project was created in response to the wave of masks which littered the streets, seemingly overnight. Each mask, a physical representation of the individual whom wore it, a discarded and obsolete artefact of a day in lockdown. But also, a critical and important decision to protect themselves and others from COVID-19. However, as a collection of images, this typology aims to highlight wider social and environmental factors of contemporary living. In particular, that of single use plastics and our ever increasing ‘disposable lifestyles’. Even with the best intentions, every decision we make has an impact on the environment. This project hopes to act as a reminder of this idea.
