A vow, broken 1m x 1.5m, mixed media on canvas (acrylic, ink, guache) In this piece I take the word ‘VOW’ and break it up into its constituent parts and separate them. A literal broken vow.
The canvas was washed in a mixture of black India ink and white acrylic paint, then marked with three shapes made by brushing a mixture of black pigments against the canvas and letting them fall, or drip where they may. Each space was then painstakingly filled with the letters. T
he slow process consumed hours and became a meditative practice, focussing on the vow in question – and find peace with its breaking. In the end it is has come to be an epitaph.
