Are other people’s feelings our responsibility?

Emma Nicholson, 22

I noticed how (particularly at work) people seem to have a mentality of ‘get through the day as quickly as possible and get home’, which on the surface seems reasonable. But when I examined this kind of thinking (after I began noticing it in myself) I realised how damaging it is to human relationships and social interactions. A lot of things are missed that should not be, people are set aside, moved out of the road. I noticed how the feelings and reactions of others are ignored or brushed off because they are unimportant, seemingly because they don’t have a recognised place in professional environments. It’s as if people forget how to react when they’re at work, they forget their human qualities and then doubt if it’s even their responsibility how other people feel. So is it?
