What is the role of community in an individualistic culture?

Emilie Robson, 25 & Laila Noble, 30

Our play places community at the centre of the narrative. Our values are strength-in-unity, celebration of the extraordinary found in the ordinary and the needs of the many being greater than that of the few. Moonlight on Leith gives a voice to the silenced and shines its light on recognisable, accessible stories that matter to its audience. No such thing as society? Tell that to a Leither.

This piece draws inspiration from the remarkable people of Leith, in particular the Save Leith Walk campaign, as an example of community engagement. Faced with the threat of cultural demolition and gentrification the people of Leith unite to save a beloved local landmark. Their determination against all odds tells a story of David and Goliath, and Moonlight on Leith honours this extraordinary community and the individuals within it.

Moonlight on Leith creates poetry out of the ordinary and every day. The play finds art in late night lager louts and beauty in the benign happenings of the streets of Leith. We wish for our audience to connect with the material as representative of them. It is important to us to make work that reflects, engages and celebrates community.
