What does a queer love song sound like?

Joe Irvine

So much of the act of listening to music as a queer person is about creating your own subtext. Often you find yourself optimistically reading between the lines of ostensibly "straight" music, developing your own counter-readings or listening to an endless amount of "boy-girl" pop, trying to find songs where the pronouns are ambiguous enough that it could possibly be about you-- "I Want to Hold Your Hand", yes, "She Loves You", not so much.

For Pride month, I wanted to write a love song that was unmistakably queer. A song which, for once, would require no such work. That's what "clothes" is-- an attempt to give voice to my own specific experience of love.
