How Aberdeen Seafood Restaurants Treat Their Octopus

Tom Byam Shaw

I want to write the human in the strange and the strange in the human. As a queer person, I have an affinity with things deemed monstrous, such as the octopus. By empathising with them and rejecting “normal” human institutions like the restaurant, I want to help reify othered; marginalised identities. In this way my work is, in a roundabout way, focused on humanity as well as simulation and self-actualisation. There’s an element of enjoyment too, as I just think octopuses are cool.
