The Holyrood Toad

The Holyrood Toad

Kirsty Oxley

'The Holyrood Toad' is a children's book which I wrote and illustrated and is inspired by the toad's migration in Holyrood Park which occurs every year. As they have done for centuries, the toad's descend from Arthur's Seat to Dunsapie Loch to spawn.
In the book, a little toad wakes up from his hibernation a little too late to find that his family have already left for their journey to the loch for the summer. On his journey to reunite with his family, he comes across several obstacles including traffic, predators and drains.
As well as being an entertaining and interactive book for children, it also subtly raises awareness of the local environment, the animals which live within it and the problems they face.
I have always had a passion in protecting the environment and by making people aware of this occurrence through the book, I hope that in the future it will contribute in helping the toad's continue their migration as they have done many years as well as encourage people to visit the area.
