The Course of War

The Course of War

Ruaraidh Williams

The entry is a piece of music I composed (performed here by The Red Note Ensemble) expressing the futility of war. It depicts the course of World War 1 and its aftermath, in four sections: the first captures the jingoistic fervour of a country going to war; the second evokes the haunting reality of no-man's land with falling shells and gunfire; the third gives a sense of mourning amongst the post-war survivors; and in the fourth final section, peace is restored … or is it? As I composed this some were commemorating the 100th anniversary of the battle of Passchendaele, whilst others were threatening 'fire and fury'. By helping listeners to remember the tragic senselessness of war I hope to nurture a spirit of peace and reconciliation across national borders and political divides.
