Sanjna Girish Yechareddy
This poem is about the feelings of detachment I experienced when I moved from India to Scotland a few months ago. The emphasis is not just on the physical separation from things I associated with home but also on the weakening of my existing connections with people. The repetition of the phrase 'And Time ran ahead' shows my disorientation due to the rapid passage of time.
However, this poem also focuses on the feelings of independence born from a detachment from my past, which pushed me to face the new world that I was presently in. I believe that the transition from loneliness and confusion to belonging and clarity, is the most important aspect of this poem.
Lastly, this poem is about my participation in the continuous process of cultural integration. Having said this, I don't wish to generalize that all people who leave their home country to work or study in a foreign country, feel the same way. I urge the reader to keep in mind the unique life experiences and backgrounds of each individual, which contributes to the complexity of this process. This poem is only a snapshot of one individual, amongst the narratives of many.
