In portrait I aimed to highlight the journey that my Grandfather went through with his illness Osteomyelitis, his periods of recuperation-rest and recovery to regain his full health. I worked in a looser style to show my brushstrokes to understand the form of the face and approach it the same way a sculptor would construct layers & build up form. I felt I was able to tell the story of the illness in more depth and include the aggressive nature of the disease in a more positive way, with the energy and fluidity of my painted marks. This method allowed me to gain confidence in my painting ability. This is one of several studies that helped me deal with how ill my grandfather became. He is a very inspirational person to me and true to his strong will and strength of character, he made a full recovery - just like the superheroes he introduced me to when I was little. My Granda is my superhero.
