Pursuing the Elusive Sun

Kate Millar

I chose to write about the relentless marching of time in my poem 'Pursuing the Elusive Sun.' I aimed to emphasise the powerlessness we have over the passing of time in order to allude to the value of mindfulness and presence in the moment. It is a difficult truth to face - the brevity of life, the powerless we have over change - but it is important to acknowledge it in order to fully appreciate the moment we are living in right now.

I focused on the extended metaphor of the seasons, and the time-span of a day, to convey how in each phase of life, we react to the passing of time in different ways. I also tried to use rhythm and rhyme to reflect my theme.

This poem is somewhat of a cautionary tale: the poem is driven by the pursuit of the sun, and our attempts to freeze time, but it ends with discontent and sadness; whilst true happiness and fulfilment could have been found if - instead of straining our eyes into the distance, and reaching out ahead of us - we turned our heads to the people, and opened our eyes to the beauty, beside us and inside us.
