The value my piece expresses is self-expression. My initial inspiration came from a Second World War era propaganda slogan ‘speak through a flower’. The slogan in its literal sense was an order not to speak out against the government. I took this notion to its most literal sense and depicted myself being unable to speak as the rose emblem covered my mouth. The piece aims to depict the feeling of being precluded from expressing ones true feelings, thoughts, ideas and opinions as a way of stressing the value in expressing oneself. This image I feel has relevance and resonance even today as society and mass culture encourages orthodoxy and is reluctant to embrace nonconformity and self-expression.
