People Make Glasgow

Shannon McClafferty

My painting expresses the values of social power within communities. Specifically that of my home city Glasgow. My subject is an abandoned building, which represents the gentrification the city is constantly undergoing, painting this building was my attempt at preserving my memory of Glasgow, a city I know which will one day eventually become somewhere I no longer recognise. The building is a symbol of the communities who are being renewed constantly and trying to better themselves. It represents both the old and the new, the traditional and the contemporary, which I have attempted to bring together through this one piece.
