Why don't I belong?

Why don't I belong?

Mariia Drobot

Most of my work and the “Blue Dog” in particular are about the lack of belonging, the state of being a foreigner everywhere you go. The importance of traditions and security are the values that are present in the piece. I left my home country five years ago to study in Scotland and with each passing year, the idea of belonging bothers me more and more. Scottish traditions, values, language and social protocol seem, surprisingly, more and more alien with each year, but upon returning home I realise that I am affected by them way more that I could have imagined and home doesn’t seem so familiar either.
