Exploiting the Mundane

The theme of my degree show collection was 'the hustle and bustle of daily life' and trying to find beauty in the mundane. I believe that, looking deeper into everyday scenes, there is a lot of exciting and varied imagery to exploit and to be excited about, especially from a creative outlook. The real challenge comes with trying to translate this onto cloth. The image shows two prints from my degree show - both inspired by imaginary found in local corner shops which has been abstracted. Both are screen printed using different materials (Chinese silk and denim) and techniques (reactive dyes and print pastes, pigment dyes and discharge printing). I wanted to give the overall impression that the person that would wear such a garment is environmentally aware - the use of a recycled jacket to apply the designs suggests this - and also fashion conscious. I drew a lot of inspiration for the designs from the punk era and also a lot from modern day designers such as Raf Simons. I want the jacket to give a sense of identity to the wearer.
