Is your self worth determined by how many likes you get on social media?

Catrina Barquist

I really started looking at what was popular online. How people acted. Selfies. People getting 100's of 1000's of likes and comments for taking a good image of themselves. People congratulating them on their appearance. I then found people who were doing absolutely amazing things with their life, so much good... teaching, volunteering, fund raising for causes and they had around 10 -30 likes. This blew my mind. I thought how can this be so important to so many people. How can they be obsessed with how people look in a photograph; how many people click a like button and a follow button. Defining self-worth from a number. The obsessions around the younger generation have with popular pages on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat that are not real, they are real people but they only exist in a screen. Once I started reading and watching videos I started realising how big this world is... I found all these studies that connect social media with things like anxiety, depression, bad body image, bullying, isolation. I knew I wanted to make work that made people think about this because I think it is an important factor in mental well-being and something that needs highlighted.
