How does 'benching' relate to the gallery?

Stephen Burke

This work references the term 'benching' in graffiti. Benching was a social activity which began in New York subway stations in the 70's. Many painters within the city would meet at a specified subway station so that they could swap notebooks, meet new painters and watch trains go by in the hopes of seeing a freshly painted carriage. This artwork takes influence from subway furniture design while also referencing the benches seen in museums. The work is designed to be engaged with and sat on as a viewing platform for other artworks and as a social area within the gallery.
