‘Giants’ is a painting made just after returning from living in Budapest for four months. The title which appears written in the painting itself, refers not to the mythological being, but more to the question of what giants exist amongst us today? What giant corporations and governments run the world? What agendas, trends, and values sweep gigantically across society today? What is the relationship between our personal identity, and global events? Are we the giants of our own lives, the centre of our own universe, or are we ants living in the shadows of giants? These are brooding existential questions that personally I find myself thinking about more when in a big city. These questions and their daunting answers are visually represented by the painted city itself, deep and complex with hidden images and words, it is visually immersive, almost nauseous. A couple lie down in the foreground with everything else behind them. The direct message "LUMP IN YOUR THROAT', spans across the painting. It is quite clear that the lump is in the throat of the sombrely painted man. This painting aims to be true to life, with a feeling of both solitude and excitement.
