Emotions in Adolescence

Rachel Park

This work expresses the values of self-respect and social justice. The theme of this work is ‘Emotions in Adolescence’. I feel that society does not shed any light on the emotional and mental issues that teens experience, and like many other issues, refuse to acknowledge them. I decided that through the course of my work, I wanted to portray emotions that teenagers experience through my use of colour. Each individual colour represents different emotions. Using portraiture, I felt that it was important to include an eye, referencing the saying that the ‘eyes are the windows to the soul’. By having these large white hands covering the face and essentially hiding the colour, I am portraying the facade that many teenagers use to hide their emotions behind, the facade created that everything is okay and ‘perfect’. The white colour of the hands is also representative of the purity of this ‘clean slate’ or ‘blank canvas’ which is used as a mask by teenagers to hide their true personalities behind, in the fear that they will not be accepted and that they must pretend to be someone or something that they’re not in order to fit in.
