See Blue is a song exploring the idea of self-direction. Coming out of adolescence, I felt like a train suddenly off the tracks. I struggled with perfectionism and meeting expectations: those I set for myself and those I perceived to be imposed on me by others. This song is for anyone trying to find courage and optimism to move into the future. It is also inspired by the value of tradition: taking stock of everything you learn as a child from your caregivers, community, and society, then using it to form your own independent identity. Thus, having gained a sense of self-reliance, you can embrace any challenge ahead.
I wrote this when I was 19 and recorded this version at 24. Between those ages I grew up considerably, and the meaning of the lyrics seemed to shift to something slightly more hopeful than how I felt when I was coming out of the angsty teenage years! I tried to reflect a sense of curiosity and experimentation in the main vocal and harmony.
