Do Women Deserve to Eat?

Natalie Peteranna

Following the important, empowering movements of the last century for woman, I want to contribute to this wave by challenging ordinary language that is used everyday regarding woman and food.

As a young woman, I have personally felt the pressure to become less, smaller and thinner to appease expectations. This has resulted in a slow burn of anxiety, sadness and in dark times manifested into dangerous actions.

This seductive desire to be lose weight has been ingrained from birth - not just by sensational media but more often by everyday language that encourages woman to “be good” and eat less.

I believe there is a growing need to acknowledge the unhealthy stereotypes and expectations in the discourse about women and their eating habits.

Ultimately, I believe awareness and understanding of this issue could contribute to letting woman feel safe, free and able to take agency in their own bodies.
