Grandad

Grandad

Charlotte Cocker

This is an oil painting on canvas of my Grandfather. My preferred style of art is the production of realistic oil portraits, and, since starting painting, I have produced various paintings of my Grandfather -it is especially interesting to witness my style develop using the same sitter. On surface level, the painting captures my Grandfather's humorous personality, highlighting my closeness to and admiration for him, yet there are also more conceptual aspects to the painting in terms of its style. The piece has been left purposely unfinished, echoing the work of Anti-realist artists such as Colin Chillag, who undermine their hyperrealistic detail by leaving it raw and unfinished, connoting themes of abrasion, ageing, and transience. In 'Grandad', I have chosen to paint only the the ear and main facial features, drawing the viewer towards these focal points. I really enjoyed completing this portrait, synthesising my interest in painting with my friendship with my Grandfather, and intend to paint more members of my family in the future
