Can memories ever really be lost?

Can memories ever really be lost?

Carys Speed

Everyone spectates or participates in memories. People are scared that when they become elderly they will forget their own precious memories but realistically this happens to a lot of the population which is a horrible experience and many reject the possibility that memories can be lost forever, this is why they bend over backwards attempting to remind their loved ones of previous events or people they once knew. How difficult it must be to see the memory of someone who once knew everything, as grand parents/parents do, slowly disappear. I believe the fear is down to being afraid of being forgotten.
I am intrigued by illnesses relating to dementia and if memories can ever re-appear. To show the disappearance of memories I faded the top of my portraits head into blackness as no one is aware of what replaces the memories which a person looses. My piece uses dark tone on one side of the face showing the progression of dementia getting worse.

Soft pastels on 1 black cartridge paper.
