Confinement

Confinement

Caitlin Urquhart

Being a vegan, animals and animal rights are close to my heart. Animals are unable to speak and use their voices to convey how they feel and I think it's important for us to do so in their absence and this is what motivated me to create this piece of art. Peppa Pig is something that disturbs me and the false sense of reality it creates and teaches children. The contrast of the reality of the meat industry/ life of pigs and the lies of the life of Peppa Pig that is fed to young, impressionable children is something I wanted to explore. I explored this contrast by using a Peppa Pig toy and squashing it into a real bacon packet to create a thought provoking piece of art that will hopefully make people reconsider their food choices and remind us of the connection between 'food' and animal, where our meat comes from, what it takes for animals to make it to the plate as well as the harsh realities of the meat industry.

A stuffed Peppa Pig play toy inside a real bacon packet with a redesigned 'bacon' label.
