Ballad of the Preacher

Ballad of the Preacher

Tommy McAteer

‘Ballad of the Preacher’ is about a preacher who has gradually lost his faith in God. Through barren sermons and heavy drinking, he has fallen into despair. At a loss for answers, the preacher digs his own grave and waits in it patiently, feeling that a meeting with God himself in Heaven is the only way for him to get the answers he needs. The track expresses the character’s disillusionment with the deity he has sworn to, and he finds himself looking for his God to guide him on the path he needs to find.
I wanted the track to feel dark and heavy, both emotionally and tonally, and the descending chord sequence represents the gradual downward spiral that the preacher is in. Unlike the preacher, I have no attachment to God or any spiritual figure, which allows me to view the story of the preacher as an outsider, or observer. I am intrigued by the concept of a religious figure losing faith, having read about it in monologues and heard it in songs like Willie Nelson’s ‘Time of The Preacher’. I greatly enjoy storytelling and wanted to bring the story of this preacher to life through song.
