The Forgotten Generation - Photography Book Project

Ellie Donnan-Thompson

The Food Train is a charity organisation aiming to support older people to live
independently in their home. The idea behind befriending is to reduce feelings of
loneliness through telephone calls, home visits and group activities. As a
volunteer within Dundee, it has become a very rewarding part of my life.
Throughout my photography project, I wanted to portray the work of the charity
in a positive light yet still show the issues that come with social isolation. I
wanted to capture the friendships the elderly share with each other and the
volunteers.

I decided on the title of my book, 'The Forgotten Generation' from the idea that
many people are still extremely oblivious to just how much of a problem social
isolation is within the elderly community. They are often neglected and left
behind with no one around to care for them. According to Age UK, 3.9 million
older people agree that television is their main form of company and 200,000
older people have not had a conversation with friends and family in a month.
Therefore, I wanted to raise awareness of this topic and shed light on charities
like The Food Train who are working hard to reduce this problem.

The project was primarily digital photography with some film photography used
in experimentation.
