My piece is written for a chamber orchestra and it was inspired by witnessing the northern lights in Scotland. My piece portrays certain aspects of our environmental cycles and it is very much connected to nature in a way that is somewhat subdued and hidden. The idea of nature is important to me as I realise without it we would not exist. Nature is man’s best friend.
My piece optimistically awakes from a deep night’s sleep. It takes time to come into existence. As the piece progresses I feel there is an element of frustration, especially in the second section, as if something is preventing the first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise, perhaps a thick grey cloud. However, this frustration eases in the third section. At the climax point I feel that the light appears and we finally get a taste of success. The whole journey of the piece itself could be interpreted as the cycle of our beautiful nature that can been found in remote desolate areas of Scotland.
