Thirsting For Hope

Kate Millar

My piece emphasises the value of hope and its power in seemingly hopeless situations. In October, I was lucky enough to go on a trip to volunteer in Swaziland, helping in schools and rural communities like Lavumisa. I was both shaken and touched by what I saw: shaken by the overwhelming sense of hopelessness of their situations; and yet, inspired by the resilient hope and strength of the people I met. I found it inspiring that hope wasn't a passive or deluded thing for them - it sustained them. And the hope didn't come from nowhere – they built the hope for themselves, cultivating it in different forms: acts of love and selflessness; a close and empowering community; the perseverance of living their daily lives. This piece is the culmination of my days in Lavumisa, it tells the true stories of the people I met there.
