The Veil of Sleep

The Veil of Sleep

Angelica Petherick

When making these paintings I used oils. Oil is a medium I am not used to using, and previously disliked, however applying the paint boldly with a heavy application helped develop my artistic abilities by building my confidence in painting more abstractly.
I wanted these paintings to represent the darker side of human nature by using such an intense dark background with the figure only slightly emerging from the darkness by painting the entire canvas with dark brown and blue mixed together which I then wiped off using various materials from paintbrushes to towels to remove large areas of paint. I really enjoyed this technique as I find using a blank canvas quite daunting.
The hidden meanings behind these paintings are to represent the unconscious state you enter when you fall asleep, as I have always questioned whether you are yourself when you are asleep and if you wake up a different person to whom you were the day before. As humans change and grow mentally so often does this also happen while we sleep? We spend almost half our lives sleeping, so some part of us must change while we are in this state of unawareness.
