Shadows

Shadows

Lily Garget

They wait and wait. I watch shadows form lines, shapes, reflections on the wall.
The darkness comes from their toes and creeps up
this hollow space,
less a blockage of light, rather a revealing of dark.
Stillness.
They do not move, their doubles, their darker selves, copying and catching them;
they have company in themselves,
always attached,
sewn on.
2 generations noses flat on the concrete,
Remember the boy who lost his shadow?
these four cannot leave theirs -
they begin and end
here.
This temporary body gripping to its coloured self,
their 2D bodies splayed across the wall
folded and repeated
a forward direction
their life vessel flattened out.
A silhouette.
4 silhouettes 4 profiles 4 heights 2 edges 1 time,
the links between them, the contact, is as a flat as the rest,
there is depth.
They wait.

My solo exhibition, 'Out of the Everywhere into Here', is currently on display at Brechin Town House Museum from 27th Jan 2018 until 10th March 2018.
