#Self-validationselfie

Chelsie Dysart

As a society we are consumed by expectations and pressure applied by mass media platforms and the male gaze. This leads to many of us becoming so conscious and aware of our self-presentation throughout our online presence that it then becomes only half of ourselves and not our true self. I carried out this performance on Instagram where I snapped a selfie each morning as soon as I woke up to expose my unconscious mind in the approach to the selfie whilst also presenting my open vulnerability with my puffy face, barely open eyes and tired expression. These selfies are not what one would call pretty. However they are powerful, liberating and a form of self-validation as the control I have to choose to post them, even though they do not present society's expectations of beauty standards. This form of self-validation itself through the performance over the duration of 2 weeks has made me feel more comfortable within my own skin and less aware of the expectations of our self-presentation and requirements for likes to feel beautiful. I would recommend everyone tries this and fully liberate themselves.
