Scar-Reader

Samantha Hutchison

In this society, tell-tale scars of abuse are seen as something to hide, to be ashamed of. They are seen as ugly and marring. But in actual fact, they are symbols of resilience and deserve to be commended. Rather than judging those with scars, we should try to understand their struggle and celebrate their determination. Everybody has a story, and this kind of hidden strength is what I wanted to convey in ‘Scar-Reader’ by using the concept of a person who is able to understand the meaning behind these marks. Through their narrative, the story of a young girl's abuse by her father is revealed and used to demonstrate that the blemishes from these occurrences run much further than skin-deep.
