Sad Subtropics

“Sweltering” will always be my most vivid impression of my homeland. It is an inseparable part of living in a subtropical island, especially during late springs, when heat and humidity weld together into an “inescapable cage” over me. It gets so powerful, I can physically sense it clinging on my body and slowly imprisoning my mind along the way.

In this painting, I want to express the everyday melancholy of people who live their mundane days in a confined island in the subtropics by having “the thirst for an outside world caused by oppressive torridity” as the unifying motif.
