I really value freedom and independence and this is reflected in my self-portrait. When the piece was created, I was at the halfway point in my first year of university. I was living away from home and supporting myself. The project asked students to look at themselves at this point in our lives. I didn't want to create anything that was too bright or full of colour as I didn't want to feel as if I was sugar coating anything by doing so, as beginning this new chapter in your life always comes with its challenges. But despite that, I am doing something that I love; creating art. To capture this within my self-portrait I created a simple black and white drawing in my favourite material; biro pen. Holding paintbrushes in my hand to symbolise my passion for art and design. I feel that the portrait is an accurate representation of myself at this time and as I continue to learn, grow and experience new things, I hope to add to what I've already shared here to represent the person I will eventually become.
