Gorge in Autumn

Pavel Isupov

I value unity with nature, more specifically the healing and uplifting qualities of being away from visible civilisation, in this disposable and complicated artificial world. Nature, both being in it and working with it, makes aspects of the human condition such as loneliness and anxiety, as opposed to a taboo and abnormal (a harsh reality for any young or old person), a comforting reminder of our fragile minds being a mere part of nature. Witnessing, and especially observing the minuscule detail, the whole of nature withering away with the seasons reminds one that these things are something beyond and above the complicated social world we live in. This piece remains one of my most important paintings for these reasons. The composition is based on a river in a woodland I used to visit often my whole life. I wanted to paint it how I felt and remembered it, when I was immersed in that environment. I didn’t use a reference image, but the long painting process was more of a memory exercise with drawings and photographs as an aid, and this meant I was truly immersed in a space I created as opposed to recreating an existing image.
