Ode To Syria

Ode To Syria

Ode To Syria

Niamh Dillon

‘I composed this short piece as an ode to Syria. In the West, we have become accustomed to seeing certain parts of the world enwrapped in destruction. Images of terror have become banal, and we have become desensitised to the relentless and senseless loss of life. We try to numb the pain, dilute the unspeakable wrongness of wars, the corruption and insanity that drives them and the eventual devastation they cause by removing ourselves from the situation. Whether it be consciously or subconsciously, we divide ourselves by religion, skin colour, customs or perhaps even geographical distance because war – its immensity, the sheer power of it – seems too deeply-rooted, too venomous, too pervasive a beast to tackle. My hope is that this piece of music conveys to the listener the profound sense of loss apparent in Syria; the mourning of what was once a progressive and prospering nation with a rich culture, as well the sense of frustration so prevalent among humanity due to feeling powerless in the face of our world in 2017. Equally, though, I hope it carries a message of quiet hopefulness. A sense of optimism that change is possible because it starts at the smallest, everyday level.’
