Paisley's Culture In Lego

Morgan Spence

I have chosen Self Direction to describe my entry. For the past 5 years I have been creating short films. My latest stop-motion animation focuses on Paisley and its bid to become the UK City of Culture in 2021. I decided to apply for grant funding through the ‘Culture Heritage and Events Fund’ as I wanted to support my local town’s bid as well as inspire the next generation of young film-makers.  The two minute short showcases some of the town’s famous sons and daughters, as well as its culture, historical figures and architecture. The interactive film effectively portrays what Paisley has offered over the years in a fun and engaging way. The toy LEGO is used to bring to life Paisley ‘buddies’ such as David Tennant, Paolo Nutini and even John Byrne himself. As a film-maker, I decided to focus on a number key themes to guide the project from conception to final delivery. I feel that my creation provokes pride and retains a sense of belonging for Renfrewshire natives. Whilst the animation is principally for people’s enjoyment, it also celebrates the cultural traditions of the town and hopefully rekindles memories of some of Paisley’s contributions to the world.
