Growing from Pages

Growing from Pages

Lauren Ferguson

Global warming is one of the world’s largest problems at present and people are always looking for ways to curtail the effects. I believe creating awareness and a discussion point is just the start of the solution. I wanted my piece to generate the discussion about reusing materials and objects to create art. This is important in today's society as we hope to inspire the younger generations to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to prevent global warming. 'Growing from Pages' has mostly been made from discarded books, found dumped among many items. Paper is one of the biggest contributions to our landfill, therefore it seemed a meaningful material to use. Reusing these books inspired me to return them into a representation of the nature from which the paper originates. The piece takes on many organic forms and its overall appearance portrays a natural plant. I think it is paramount that we use visual art to continue to stimulate awareness about the importance of reusing discarded materials in order for us to protect our environment.
