This pen and pencil drawing has been inspired by the poster for the popular film ‘High Rise’ based on a novel by J. G. Ballard. I felt the image perfectly explored the idea of ambition. Around the main pyramid structure are the various encounters that might be needed to make it to a position of power. In contrast to the original poster I limited the colour, using red, to portray passion and struggle. The photographer on the top right depicts fame whilst the well-dressed woman to the reverse of this conveys wealth and glamour. The elderly man in the centre shows wisdom which correlates to the stance of ‘power’ shown from the man below him. The horse and dog amongst the human figures conveys the variety of relationships needed to reach the top of society and as well as this the built environment of the apartment block shows where the journey to success began. The boy in the lower section of the picture is ultimately the starting point from where all these possible paths in life could be achieved, but the man falling also makes it apparent failure can play a part within this process of becoming famous and successful.
