I am fascinated by the paradox that our global world presents; that at a time where all physical barriers to inter-state communication have been broken down, we choose still to erect new walls. This has never been more strongly illustrated than through the results of the recent US election. ‘Cultural Appreciation’ is intended as a reflective piece that confronts these man-made barriers between peoples, cultures and faiths. Centring around a physical journey from my childhood, I aimed to show through this an important metaphysical journey that I experienced at the same time. I believe that intolerance is ultimately a product of ignorance and so I hope my piece reflects the importance of being present and open-minded throughout life, and constantly challenging oneself to new experiences. Whilst my own journey in this regard is still taking place, the more I observe – and indeed the more my persona observes in this essay – the more I become aware of a central truth. Whilst our world holds people with a kaleidoscope of values, these can all be seen as different reflections of one shared humanity. It is by being aware of this that our world can be a more connected and kinder place.
