Into the Woods

Into the Woods

Rebecca Eggeling

This is a coming of age painting (35 X 37 inch oil on canvas) which explores the bridge from childhood to adolescence that shapes self-identity. The persona is my 13 year old sister, who's guarded facade looks both menacing and fearful. The light cast across her face shows her transition into a new stage of life; from innocence and youth to independence and wisdom. It exists in a state of liminality, of a time where self-direction is undiscovered. As eyes are the windows to the soul, it is significant that one is cast in the shadows whilst the other looks forward into the light. This mimics the nature of adolescence; a challenging time for self-worth and confidence in light of new beginnings which bring opportunities for creativity and freedom in self-expression. This powerful transition in life is sullied with feelings of confusion and wonder that manifest at such an age; I hope these thoughts are shared by the viewer as they dissect the image, resonating with the persona as she herself questions who she is.
