Nest

Nest

Nest

Hannah Paterson

This painting is inspired by the Self Direction, security. After losing my Gran, who was my best friend and told everything to I felt I had no one to turn to. And then other dramatic events in my life occurred soon after, I started to pile up and hide my emotions and this is what i wanted to express as I know many others go through issues at any point in life where they feel that they cannot express their thoughts and emotions due to a number of different reasons. But as I went through my development i wanted to express the journey more. In the painting, (acrylic on straw, sand, toilet paper, dried acrylic on canvas,) my face is hidden behind red thread so that you only see my eyes. The thread symbolises a nest which i saw as a symbol of life, second chances, new beginnings. I still haven't healed from these events in my life or the loss of my gran as others haven't healed from their issues whether it be addiction etc. But the nest even though is can be tangled it is our place of safety, it allows us to grow and to learn and once ready to express our emotions we can begin again, have a second chance, and start a new chapter in our lives. It is a hope that we aren't stuck in our troubled times, it just takes time and we will be free once more so that we can look at life in a different way and others will look at us for who we are and that the pain that we feel is nothing to be ashamed of.
