An Ocean Divided

Gabriella Hussey

'An Ocean Divided' is a site-specific wall sculpture of a coral reef. It is made from commonly used items (e.g. toothpicks, paper plates, cupcake holders and cotton balls) and expanding insulation foam. The set of values that comes under "Humanity" links closely with my piece. The positioning of the reef exiting a pipe symbolises the pollution we, as humans, are causing to enter our oceans. The lack of colour on the right-hand side of the reef shows the death and deterioration we are causing for our coral reefs. Both the use of the pipe and the colour white help to show the need for the value of "protecting the environment". However, the intricate and decorative forms seen and bright colours used on the left-hand side symbolise the value of "a world of beauty". By seeing the beauty found underwater and the destroying effects we are causing to the life forms, all in one sculpture, it is highlighting the importance of having "unity with nature" by being aware of its importance. It also expresses the value of "reciprocation of favours" because nature provides us with so much and we need to take care of it in return.
