The Glasgae Boys

The Glasgae Boys

Francesca Kennedy

The Glasgae Boys' is a film inspired by the poetry of Colin McGuire. The theme of this film essentially encapsulates a variety of values because it challenges the people of Glasgow to take a closer look at themselves, their traditions, toxic belief systems and history of violence. The poem itself is a satirical look at the 'hypermasculine' obsessions that many Glaswegian men have, and how these obsessions adversely affect their mental health and those around them.
By definition, hypermasculinity is a psychological term for the exaggeration of male stereotypical behaviour, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression, and sexuality.
The point that both the poem and the film are trying to make is that in reality masculinity, like Glasgow, has many different traits and aspects.
Like Glasgow, men are a lot more complex and diverse than stereotypes may lead you to believe.
Like Glasgow, we need to acknowledge a man’s past to understand his present and allow him to grow.
Social Acceptance Vs Personal Acceptance is the theme of this film and we hope that this film helps you to become a little more accepting of the tough, yet sensitive souls of Glasgow.
