For Kim Jonghyun

Iona Watt

This was the first time I can recall that I’ve been affected by the mortality of
humans. This week, I unfortunately heard of the death of the lead singer of my
favourite group, SHINee. Over time, I grew to love and appreciate the individual
talents of all five of them and Jonghyun’s passing made me cry all of that
evening.
My poem covers “Influential” as a value. It shows the innermost feelings of
someone experiencing the sudden absence of a person who had shaped their
life. I wanted to show that the mark a simple human can create on the life of
someone else will never go away, even if they do. Cliched, but that doesn’t make
it any less true.
“Enjoyment of Life” is both covered and subverted, as it talks about how it is
hard to see the beauty of living when you’re only full of regret and anger, but
also goes on to say how life will get better, because time is the best medicine. It
reminds the reader that there will come a day when you’ll be able to look back at
a dead person’s life and only think about the good, not the sad.
