To Mr Yeats

Finn Manders

Wisdom. A poem written by one who cannot claim to be wise, inspired by those of a man who staked a significant claim in such a word. I wanted to challenge Yeats' often rather all-knowing themes that run through his work, whilst communicating my respect for his poetry and the way he so often communicated with grace, humility and understanding. His ideas about class and society contrast to my own and so I felt inclined to question not only these superficial concepts but his deeper beliefs about the value of life, and the overall significance of attaching great meaning to everyday concepts. Ultimately, I feel Yeats wanted to capture the best of humanity but in doing so too often romanticised and left us without self-respect; I ask him what it is to be wise in my final rhetorical question.
