Endgame is a live mise en scène, an interactive vignette - a cinematic construct for the benefit of the audience present. 

It was intended to be an expression of genuine hope, coupled with cold fear that this may all be for nothing, that no one may care, that years of dedication could have all been a complete waste of time. 

The music began with pomp and majesty, yet slowly over time the boat began to sink into the water below.
