Shadows of the Past

Shadows of the Past

Emma Stephenson

My painting describes the values of Humanity, Kindness and Tradition.

The woman staring into another shadow represents reflection and memories that still remain of an absent person. The impact that people have on other lives, the wisdom and insight that people gain shape who they are and define the degree of their inner harmony. The shadow suggests that the viewer also reflect. We forget pain, heartbreak and sadness. However, we don’t forget love. Therefore, in my view, it is the strongest emotion. This painting portrays longing; the warmth from the red crossover of shadow represents mutual love and intertwining of the lives these people share(d). Their love is almost on a spiritual level: perpetual love and friendship. There is a respect for tradition as the woman reflects on the past, remembering, not regretting.
