This Is Sam and He Is Pink

Daisy Hutton

I have created a small story called ‘This is Sam and he is pink.’ Sam explains throughout the story that he is pink like many beautiful things, however this is because he lacks hair. His positive outlook on the fact that he is hairless, and therefore abnormal to other rabbits, encourages people to enjoy their differences and the quirks that make them unique and special. The fact that we find out at the end of the story that he is pink due to not having any hair doesn’t diminish either Sam or the rest of the story. He is still as pink as seashells under the moon and pretty flowers and that should be celebrated and Sam treated as an equal. Sam has learned to love his look however run down and grungy it seems. That look is ‘in’ this year anyway! The fact that we are lured in to loving Sam before we discover the reason for his difference encourages us to be more broadminded and to look beyond first (often visual) impressions.
